Pink Goes Red for Women Health Symposium by Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority Houston Metropolitan Area Chapters

February 2 | 10:00 am2:00 pm CST

A long tradition for the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to wear the colors pink and green, but in February, the AKAs join millions of Americans in the fight against heart disease in women by wearing RED!

Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer of women, taking the life of one in three women each year, and this is especially important for African-American women; who are increased risk due to factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes.

The beauty and strength of the African American culture rests in the family, and the heartbeat of the family is the wife and mother. Unfortunately, heart disease and stroke are attacking that heartbeat.

The African American population in Texas is in danger. The number of deaths related to heart disease and stroke, the nation’s leading causes of death and disability respectively, are out of control. The death rate of African American females is 69% higher than those of other ethnicities that are attributed to heart disease and stroke.

Go Red for Women Health Symposium is a free event designed to educate and empower African American women to live heart healthy lives. The Symposium includes; free health screenings, panel discussion with Q&A and a survivor (s) testimony. This education is critical for Harris County where African American women constitute 12% of our population. In addition, 49% of this community is under the age of 65 which presents a tremendous opportunity to encourage lifestyle changes that lead to prevention of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
