“Awareness of heart valve disease is surprisingly low, and because it often shows no symptoms—or those symptoms are brushed off as just a part of getting older—it frequently flies under the radar. That’s why The Texas Heart Institute is excited to be part of the Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day campaign, urging everyone to truly listen to their hearts!”
On February 22, The Texas Heart Institute (THI) will shine a spotlight on National Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day, focusing on a condition that affects a staggering 11 million Americans. Throughout February, THI will host a series of educational events to inform our community about heart valve disease and emphasize the critical importance of early detection and treatment. Be sure to check out our event calendar for activities happening across The Texas Heart Institute!
Heart valve disease can damage one or more of the heart’s four valves. While some types may not be a big deal, others can lead to serious complications, including death. Shockingly, over 25,000 people in the U.S. lose their lives to heart valve disease each year. The good news? Most cases can be treated successfully with valve repair or replacement, no matter the patient’s age. THI is joining forces with a nationwide coalition of organizations, advocates, healthcare professionals, patients, and families to boost awareness of heart valve disease and stress the necessity of early detection and treatment.
Despite the millions of Americans affected by heart valve disease, a recent survey found that three in four adults know little to nothing about heart valve disease. Although age is the greatest risk factor for heart valve disease 30 percent of respondents over age 65 say they know nothing about the disease.
