What Helps the Heart Might Help the Eyes

Dr. James Martin, Director of Texas Heart Institute’s Cardiomyocyte Renewal Laboratory, and his team’s research on genetic pathways have led to new discoveries that allow cell signaling channels called the “Hippo pathway” to be manipulated to trigger heart cells to multiply and essentially repair scarred heart muscle.

The knowledge gained from these initial studies inspired Dr. Martin to collaborate with Texas Medical Center colleagues to pursue the possibility of restoring lost vision by manipulating this same pathway to trigger cell growth in the retina.
