2nd Annual Perioperative MCS Symposium

February 16 - 17, 2024 | Hybrid Symposium + Workshop

2nd Annual Perioperative Mechanical Circulatory Support Symposium (Adult & Pediatric) &

Cutting-Edge Critical Care Echocardiography Workshop

The 2nd Annual Perioperative MCS Symposium is a 2-day hybrid course. The symposium will take advantage of modern educational concepts to provide clinically relevant material through an interprofessional and multidisciplinary approach to the perioperative management of patients undergoing mechanical circulatory support (MCS). In addition, a complementary advanced critical care echocardiography (CCE) workshop will be offered. The highly interactive approach puts the learner in the position of the clinician needing to make both simple and more complex decisions commonly faced when providing MCS and utilizing CCE.

The evolving MCS experience through pediatric and adult populations has led to its further application in pediatric and adult congenital heart disease patients. Therefore, this year, we have collaborated with one of the world’s most respected Pediatric MCS teams – from Texas Children’s Hospital, within our Baylor College of Medicine community. We are very excited to share an MCS continuum of care for patients of all ages.

Interactive Learning & Hands-on Training

Multidisciplinary Approach to Clinical Decision-Making

On Day 1, concurrent tracks will cover the use of perioperative mechanical circulatory support in adult and pediatric patients.

On Day 2, participants will experience highly interactive learning in small groups (1:4 ratio). Hands-on training will be used to expose the learner to a range of typical diagnostic approaches to specific scenarios with advanced critical care echocardiography in refractory shock and ultrasound procedural guidance.

Special sessions will provide an opportunity for participant education on perioperative complications of MCS in select populations of patients.

Program Overview

The 2nd Annual Perioperative MCS Symposium is a 2-day hybrid course. The symposium will take advantage of modern educational concepts to provide clinically relevant material through an interprofessional and multidisciplinary approach to the perioperative management of patients undergoing mechanical circulatory support (MCS). In addition, a complementary advanced critical care echocardiography (CCE) workshop will be offered. The highly interactive approach puts the learner in the position of the clinician needing to make both simple and more complex decisions commonly faced when providing MCS and utilizing CCE. There will be greater emphasis on the multidisciplinary approach to complex clinical decision-making. Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of each lecture in the series, the participant should be able to:

  • Analyze the most prevalent complications of temporary MCS.
  • Describe approaches to address candidacy factors associated with worse LVAD implantation outcomes.
  • Describe interventions to effectively treat intraoperative complications associated with worse LVAD implantation outcomes.
  • Describe a systematic diagnostic approach and aggressive management to perioperative RV failure, including RVAD support commencement.
  • Analyze a cost-effective and safe advanced practice provider-driven model of perioperative care in patients receiving MCS.
  • Describe clinical scenarios in which comprehensive echocardiography by a cardiologist is preferable in MCS support. Describe scenarios in which an intensivist can perform critical care echocardiograms, leading to more timely and safer MCS management than consultative echocardiography.
  • Identify different types of VADs and their indications and discuss recent innovations in VAD design.
  • Evaluate the risks and benefits associated with VAD therapy in individual cases.
  • Understand the unique challenges associated with ACHD VAD implantation.
  • Explain the principles of anesthesia for pediatric VAD implantation.
  • List potential complications of pediatric VAD implantation and implement effective strategies for their prevention and management.
  • Engage in ethical discussions about the use of VADs in pediatric patients.
