Celebrate the First Heart Month of the Decade with Texas Heart Institute

February is American Heart Month, and each year there are a number of events and activities that Texas Heart Institute (THI) supports in order to raise awareness about the importance of heart health. Learn more about the different events we are supporting this year for Heart Month, and if you’re in the Houston area, we hope you will join!

 

February 1 – Pink Goes Red for Women Health Symposium by Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority Houston Metropolitan Area Chapters at the 5th Ward Community Multi-Service Center

A long tradition for the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to wear the colors pink and green, but in February, the AKAs join millions of Americans in the fight against heart disease in women by wearing RED! Go Red for Women Health Symposium is a free event designed to educate and empower African American women to live heart healthy lives. The Symposium includes; free health screenings, panel discussion with our own Dr. Briana Costello, Q&A and survivor testimony.

 

February 6 & 7 – Fourth Annual Imagine, Inspire, Challenge Symposium (II+C) “Stem Cell Therapies in 2020: Healing, Hope or Hype

Mississippi University for Women will host its fourth annual II+C. This year’s conference is titled “Stem Cell Therapies in 2020: Healing, Hope or Hype” and THI’s Dr. Doris Taylor and Dr.  Luiz Sampaio will speak.

The James T. Willerson, MD, Cardiovascular Seminar Series is a multi‐institutional program organized by the Texas Heart Institute, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. This seminar series provides a unified forum for the cardiovascular research community within the Texas Medical Center to meet, and it connects us to outstanding scientists nationally and internationally.

Friday, February 7 – National Wear Red Day and Go Red for Women

Heart disease claims the lives of 1 in 3 women. This devastating disease impacts a third of all mothers, sisters and friends. As Dr. Willerson and Dr. Coulter remind us, heart disease causes more deaths in women than all forms of cancer, accidents and diabetes combined. Wear Red today for your family, for your friends and for the millions of women, men, and children around the world living with heart disease.

Saturday, February 8 – 10th Annual Women’s Heart & Vascular Symposium

The Center for Women’s Heart & Vascular Health sponsors this important, annual symposium to provide updates on the most current issues concerning cardiovascular disease in women. This program is an accredited, full day symposium for all healthcare providers caring for women today including; cardiologists, surgeons, obstetricians/gynecologists, emergency medicine, internal medicine, family practice, endocrinologists, nurses and nurse practitioners about prevention, early diagnosis and treatment strategies for heart disease in women.

 

Wednesday, February 12 – WomenHeart Houston Support Group

WomenHeart Houston is a support group providing peer-to-peer patient support and education for women living with heart disease. This kind of support is crucial to a woman’s recovery and well-being, and that of her family.

Saturday, February 15 – The Ali Massumi Cardiac Arrhythmia Symposium

The Ali Massumi Cardiac Arrhythmia Symposium is designed to provide cardiac electrophysiologists, cardiologists, internists, fellows, cath lab technicians, family and general practitioners and associated professionals with state-of-the-art information on the fundamental mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias and the best practice approaches to clinical diagnosis, evaluation, and management of abnormal heart rhythms.

 

Wednesday, February 15 – #ValveDiseaseDay 2020 Twitter Chat 

In celebration of Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day, the Alliance for Aging Research will be hosting the lunch chat on Wednesday, February 19 (Noon-1:00 pm CT)

Saturday, February 22 – Girl Scouts Project Heart Day 2020 with Cool-E

Join us in American Heart Month as Girl Scouts celebrate with the Texas Heart Institute for the 6th year! Girls will learn the importance of staying fit for heart health with robot “Cool-E” of Project Heart fame while exploring heart anatomy, the cardiovascular system, healthy eating and exercise.

 

Saturday, February 22 – National Valve Disease Awareness in February 2020

On February 22, Texas Heart Institute (THI) will celebrate National Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day, bringing attention to a disease that impacts as many as 11 million Americans. Texas Heart Institute will host several educational events throughout the month of February to educate the community about heart valve disease and reinforce the importance of early detection and treatment. Visit our event calendar for details.
