HOUSTON, Texas – (September 22, 2022) – Nikolaos A. Diakos, MD, PhD, an interventional cardiologist and specialist in heart failure, has joined the Texas Heart Medical Group and will also collaborate with The Texas Heart Institute’s research community to pioneer new treatments and devices.

“Dr. Diakos strengthens our longstanding commitment to clinical excellence in the modern diagnosis and management of heart failure and the use of the most contemporary and innovative tools to treat patients with coronary artery disease,” said Dr. Eduardo Hernandez, President of the medical group.

Dr. Diakos comes to Houston from Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York. He received his medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Athens.

After graduation, Dr. Diakos moved to the United States to complete a fellowship in translational research at the joint Utah Cardiac Recovery Program/University of Utah Molecular Medicine Program/Eccles Institute of Human Genetics in Salt Lake City, Utah. He then pursued a residency in internal medicine at the University of Utah. Following that, Dr. Diakos completed a clinical and research fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, a fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplantation at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University in New York City, and interventional cardiology training at Montefiore in New York.

He is recognized for his substantial clinical and translational research accomplishments in the areas of heart failure and mechanical cardiac support. He has authored many papers in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation. He has also won almost a dozen awards for his research, including an award from the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, a Research Merit Scholarship from the Acute Cardiac Unloading and Recovery Working Group (A-Cure), and numerous awards from the Hellenic Cardiological Society.
