Texas Heart Announces New President of Its Clinical Practice, the Texas Heart Medical Group (THMG)

AN INAUGURAL MEMBER OF THMG WHEN IT LAUNCHED IN OCTOBER OF LAST YEAR, DR. EDUARDO HERNANDEZ NOW TAKES ON TOP LEADERSHIP ROLE AT THE BURGEONING CARDIOLOGY PRACTICE

HOUSTON, TX – The Texas Heart Institute has announced that  Eduardo Hernandez-Vila, MD has been named President of its Texas Heart Medical Group clinical practice. A practicing cardiologist since 2000, Dr. Hernandez specializes in coronary and peripheral arterial disease – as well as venous disease – focusing on both medical and interventional management. He transitions into the role previously held by THI Chief Financial Officer Howard K. Schramm, who served as THMG’s acting President when the new practice launched in October of 2020.

Prior to practicing cardiology, Dr. Hernandez completed his medical training at the University of Puerto Rico.  He then completed internship and residency training at the University of Alabama in Birmingham, followed by fellowships in Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology and Advanced Peripheral Vascular interventions at the Texas Heart Institute and the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Hernandez is a professional staff member of the Texas Heart Institute and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine. Additionally, he serves as Medical Director at the Diagnostic Heart Center of St. Luke’s.

“Dr. Hernandez is widely respected by his peers, his patients, and the broader cardiology community in equal measure,” stated Texas Heart Institute President & CEO Dr. Joseph G. Rogers. Dr. Rogers added, “THI thanks Howard Schramm for his invaluable leadership in getting the Medical Group off the ground and quickly positioned to be a successful clinical practice as the Institute’s first foray into direct clinical care.  I look forward to Dr. Hernandez’s leadership as the group expands to provide outstanding, patient-centered care in convenient locations for our community.”

Launched on October 1, 2020, the Texas Heart Medical Group serves as a home base for twelve outstanding cardiologists who are leaders in general and preventative cardiology, cardiac imaging, interventional cardiology, peripheral vascular disease, electrophysiology, and heart failure. Collectively, Texas Heart Medical Group’s physicians embody the totality of Texas Heart Institute as a fully integrated clinical cardiology practice encompassing the areas of education, research and direct patient care.

During the course of a decorated career in cardiology practice, Dr. Hernandez has been named a Legacy member of the Texas Super Doctor Hall of Fame – having been selected for over 15 years by his peers.  He has received recognition from Bridges to Excellence, the Heart/Stroke Recognition Program, and the Patient’s Choice Award. He is involved in clinical research, participating in numerous clinical trials in both coronary and peripheral vascular disease, antiplatelet therapy, and antithrombotic therapy.

“I am honored to take on the challenge of leading this outstanding group of cardiologists,” Dr. Hernandez emphasized. He added, “This Medical Group is remarkable in terms of its expertise and commitment to excellence.  The sky is the limit when it comes to what we can collectively achieve in regard to helping patients to overcome the debilitating effects of heart and vascular disease on a daily basis. The future is decidedly bright for the practice, and I am honored to shepherd this talented collection of medical professionals as we drive forward in the pursuit of achieving The Next First in preventing, diagnosing, and treating cardiovascular disease.”

The offices at Texas Heart Medical Group are housed at St. Luke’s Medical Tower, Suite 2780. THMG is open Monday through Friday and accepts the majority of health insurance plans as well as assignments for Medicare patients.
