Advances In the Recellularization of Heart Scaffolds

Advancing the field toward the ultimate goal of recellularizing human hearts for transplant.

Long-term solutions to the donor heart shortage through whole-organ bioengineering, as well as novel tissue-engineering, are approaches to advance cardiovascular disease research.

Investigators in the Regenerative Medicine Research Department at THI seek a long-term solution to the donor heart shortage through whole-organ bioengineering, as well as novel tissue-engineering approaches to advance cardiovascular disease research.

Led by Camila Hochman-Mendez, PhD, the group has focused on specific milestones that will advance the regenerative medicine field toward the ultimate goal of recellularizing human hearts for transplant. Recent advances include recellularization of the left ventricle of a rabbit heart scaffold at a cellular density and a level of structural integrity surpassing anything previously reported. This work was recently published in Acta Biomaterialia, one of the top 5 materials science journals worldwide.
