Question:

In the presence of normal diagnostics, what is the cause of chest pain?

My father is a 48-year-old man who has been having a pain on the left side of the chest along his heart. We consulted the doctor and tests, including an EKG, were normal. Can you suggest reasons for this kind of pain? My father also is undergoing surgery for gallstones.

Gall stones can often cause a chest pain that mimics angina (heart pain). However, if any of his symptoms are worse with exertion or if there is shortness of breath, then stress testing might be indicated prior to gallbladder surgery.
