CME Information - Overview

This symposium focuses on recent findings regarding common problems facing physicians who treat patients with cardiac arrhythmias. Presentations discuss evaluation and treatment of patients with supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, including pharmacologic therapies, the use of implantable cardioverter defibrillators, and ablation techniques. The molecular and cellular basis of conduction disturbances is also discussed with the goal of providing insights into the fundamental mechanisms of cardiac arrhythmias and the identification of appropriate targets for antiarrhythmic therapy.

Educational Objectives
The intended result of this activity is increased knowledge. At the conclusion of this program, participants should be able to—

  • Discuss treatment guidelines for atrial fibrillation.
  • Identify the indications and potential complications of catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation.
  • Determine when to anticoagulate in atrial fibrillation.
  • Identify the uses of amiodarone, dofetilide, and dronedarone.
  • Discuss approaches to the care of a patient with a cardiac device.
  • Discuss the genetics of cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Summarize the utilization of ablation therapy for various types of ventricular tachycardia, including outflow tract, fascicular, and ischemic ventricular tachycardia.

Target Audience
The intended audience for this continuing medical education activity includes cardiac electrophysiologists, cardiologists with an interest in electrophysiology, and internists with an interest in cardiology. The symposium will also benefit those physicians who practice internal medicine, family medicine, and emergency medicine.
