Dr. Mark Kline, Dr. James T. Willerson, Dr. Ron DePinho and Rex Tillerson at announcement.
With gratitude and excitement, I am happy to report that ExxonMobil announced today some generous grants to the Texas Heart Institute (THI), The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and Texas Children’s Hospital that will help energize research and improved care and prevention for cardiovascular disease, cancer and children’s health issues.
It was my pleasure to join ExxonMobil Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson in downtown Houston as he announced grants to THI and the other two Texas Medical Center institutions totaling $18 million.
THI is very grateful to be the recipient of $5 million which is the largest corporate gift in THI’s history.
As I said at the press conference, ExxonMobil’s generous grant, which will be paid out over five years, will be transformational across our research efforts. It will boost and support our progress in many areas, from genetic discovery and manipulation to adult stem cell therapy. From building a new total artificial heart to advancing our ability to grow new organs using a patient’s own cells. From our efforts to prevent sudden cardiac death in young people to our work to improve survival for women, who die in greater numbers than men from heart disease.
These funds will help us further develop the most promising new treatments and prevention strategies for what is the No. 1 health threat to every man, woman and child in the country, and the world – cardiovascular disease.
ExxonMobil is a giant of the energy industry. It has certainly energized life-changing, life-saving medical advancements today. In doing so, it demonstrates that the people of ExxonMobil are indeed dedicated to improving the lives and health of Houstonians and all Texans.
So, I am very grateful on behalf all of the dedicated physicians, scientists, nurses and others at the Texas Heart Institute. Also on behalf of millions of people who will be helped by the medical progress being fueled by these grants, I say a profound thank you to you Mr. Tillerson and to all the people of ExxonMobil – from the very depths of our hearts.
With respect and gratitude,
James T. Willerson, MD
