Question:

What can help my husband’s symptoms after bypass surgery?

My husband had quadruple bypass four weeks ago and found out he has an inflamed heart. Symptoms are swelling in feet, shortness of breath, and lack of energy. What can be done to alleviate this condition?

Answer:

by Texas Heart Institute cardiovascular surgeon, James J. Livesay, MD

James J. Livesay, MDThere are several explanations for your complaints four weeks after bypass surgery. All patients have some shortness of breath and lack of energy after a surgical procedure. Swelling of the feet can be as a result of fluid retention or some other problems related to your surgery such as heart failure or fluid around the heart. These should be discussed with your physician.
