Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Cited for Best Heart Care

Symbol of ExcellenceIn the May-June 2009 issue of AARP The Magazine, the world’s largest circulation magazine, an article entitled, “The Right Hospital For You,” discussed the advantages of seeking care at the nation’s highest-ranked hospitals. Included in the article were results from a survey conducted by Consumers’ Checkbook, a nonprofit research organization. More than 140,000 physicians in 53 major metropolitan areas were asked where they were most likely to send patients with extremely difficult cases.

For heart care, the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital was among the nine hospitals cited. The other hospitals recognized were Brigham and Women’s Hospital; NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital; The Johns Hopkins Hospital; Cleveland Clinic; Mayo Clinic; Stanford University Medical Center; and Massachusetts General Hospital.

The article noted that some large insurance companies are steering patients with unusual or complex medical problems to specialized institutions. These facilities, or “centers of excellence,” have more experience and better results, and they are also more likely to have familiarity with the latest research findings.

Dr. James T. Willerson Shares Medical Expertise

The Texas Senate Health and Human Services Committee met in March to assess Senate Bill 73 that would help improve adult stem cell research in Texas. The committee heard from medical experts including Dr. James T. Willerson, President and Medical Director of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, who spoke about the benefits of stem cell research.  He shared his and Dr. Emerson Perin’s experience using adult stem cells in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston.

“Fourteen patients with severe heart failure were treated for the very first time in the world by injecting directly into their hearts their own bone-marrow derived stem cells," Dr. Willerson said.  “Within two months, they had improved blood flow. Within four months, they had improved contractions of their hearts, and some were even jogging on the beach in Rio."

Dr. Willerson added that it is ultimately going to be possible to replace a whole human heart with the stem cells, so he urged the legislature not to limit the use of adult human stem cells.
