Heart Exchange Support Group Advances the
Progress against Cardiovascular Disease

(News of Note - March 23, 2009) On February 21st, the Heart Exchange Support Group (Heart Exchange) hosted its 11th Annual Organ Donor Night at a Houston Aeros hockey game. Dr. William E. Cohn, cardiovascular surgeon and Director of Minimally Invasive Surgical Technology at the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital (THI at SLEH), was honored with the “Face-Off” puck drop. During the intermission, heart transplant recipients Rebecca Butler and Tom Griggs, along with Aeros representative Clint Pettijohn, presented Dr. Cohn with a $20,000 check for research to cure heart disease.

The Heart Exchange exists for the benefit of heart transplant patients. Its members include heart transplant recipients, those in need of transplants, families, friends, and nurses. The Heart Exchange sponsors two “Donor Awareness” functions every year— one at a Houston Astros baseball game and another at a Houston Aeros hockey game.

The Heart Exchange also presents the annual Heart Exchange Golf Classic Tournament. Proceeds from this event are used to help provide housing and medicines for heart transplant recipients, to educate SLEH nurses, and to support heart transplant research at the Texas Heart Institute.
